National three peaks challenge

Teams departing, Monday 12/06 Nine groups tackled the Three Peaks Challenge, the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis 1344m), England (Scafell Pike 978m) and Wales (Snowdon 1085m). An inspiring show of determination came from the final two participants, Nigel and Niel Wood from the RFL, who crossed the finish line after 31 hours.

Leeds Met Team One was the first team to complete the Challenge. The group tackled the highest mountains in 19 hours and three minutes.

The Three Peaks Challenge represents a partnership between Leeds Met Carnegie and The Rugby Football League (RFL) with the aim of raising at least £10,000 towards the RFL Benevolent fund. Teams of colleagues, led by an outdoor instructor, participated in the challenge on 13 and 14 June 2006.

Fitness assessments for the challenge have been conducted with the British Army Everest West Ridge team and training days have included tackling local peaks in Yorkshire and the Lake District.
