School of the Built Environment

International Work

We live in an ever-changing world; the social and international environment is in a constant state of flux.  Those who have the skills to adapt the built environment to meet these changes will be in global demand.  Within the School, we teach the whole range of Built Environment skills needed to see a project through from conception to completion, from Urban Geography to Civil Engineering, at every level from HND to PhD.  The majority of courses are available in both full and part time modes of attendance; at postgraduate level, some are even available by distance learning where no attendance is required.

The School has a good overseas profile.  Within Europe, we do a large amount of EU funded work related to:

Planning, Governance and Sustainability
Local and Regional Regeneration
Housing and Neighbourhoods

Many of these projects are done jointly with other European institutions.

Internationally we have been active in Sub Saharan East Africa for more than 20 years.  Much of the work we do in this part of the world constitutes capacity building and applied research.  Developing countries cannot exist forever on foreign aid; at some stage, they must become self-sufficient.  All our projects address either directly or indirectly, the Millennium Development Goals.  One of our aims is to help these countries expand their educational capability in the field of the Built Environment.  We help in updating the curriculum & teaching materials, course modularisation, staff development and quality assurance systems.  We will work wherever there is a demand for the skills that we offer.  Currently we are looking to strengthening our links with Malaysia, particularly at postgraduate level.

Distance learning courses for delivery over the internet through the WEB CT platform are in development. The following are currently available:

MSc Facilities Management
MSc Civil Engineering Commercial Management
MSc Quantity Surveying Commercial Management
MSc Building Surveying

Overseas students can now obtain a UK qualification without having to pay UK living costs.  No longer do you have to leave your family for long periods or give up a well-paid job in your own country.  Provided you have reliable access to the internet, you can study for a UK postgraduate qualification without the expense or social upheaval of travelling to the UK.

The School has a growing interest in applied research.  We are receiving external funding for an African based PhD research student to look into the development of a new method of filtering water using locally produced vegetable fibres.  The practical work for the project is in Malawi but the academic supervision is in Leeds.  We intend to develop other projects using a similar model.
