School of the Built Environment

News from the School of the Built Environment

Northern Terrace front entrance The School of the Built Environment's students and staff are based at Northern Terrace, Civic Quarter where the facilities are designed to support the learning experience.

First year Geography and Planning students have been helping to survey car parking facilities in the centre of Hebden Bridge.  40 students worked on the exercise and produced a series of reports summarising their findings. Lesley Mackay from the HBPWG said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain up-to-date information about car parking in Hebden Bridge. We are extremely grateful to the students from Leeds Met University for carrying out this work”.

Lecturer Dr Lindsay Smales made a presentation to Hebden Royd Town Council summarising the students’ findings and three First Year students answered questions. The politicians were very complementary of the student’s efforts and found they would be helpful in both clarifying and raising key issues about to how this traditional Pennine town can accommodate and manage the car and expectations of visitors, residents and the local business community.

A complimentary study will be undertaken between March and June when students on the MA in Town Planning will be working in groups with local politicians to generate a sustainable ‘vision’ for the town of Hebden Bridge as a whole.

Nathan Legge, a final year student on the BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology completed a unique study of the revitalisation of a Victorian terraced property.

Level 1 Human Geography and Human Geography and Planning students have embarked on an assessment of the accessibility and inclusive nature of Leeds City Centre. The assessment forms part of a Research Methods module and is designed to raise student awareness of disability and the different needs of people within society, whilst applying research techniques to gather data. Students will consider aspects ranging from disabled access to parking, shops and street furniture. In particular, they will be looking at the study using participant observation techniques to try to understand how obstacles might make someone who is wheelchair bound 'feel' about accessing Leeds City Centre.
