Field trips are an essential part of our courses. They support understanding of the context for design projects and help inspire the designer's imagination.

Most project work involves day-long field visits to sites in the region, often with their designers and other experts. Each level of our undergraduate courses has a residential field trip.

Level One: Holy Island

One of the first activities you will experience on the course is a week’s visit to the Holy Island off the Northumberland coast. The trip helps everyone to get to know one another and involves learning how to read the landscapes historic, cultural and natural influences. The trip also develops drawing and observation skills and introduces environmental art.

Level Two: Lake District

The Lake District Field Trip is based at a beautiful location on the banks of Coniston Water. It explores landscape and garden design within the context of a sensitive, rural landscape. On both courses students visit a wide range of different sites and consider design responses to the natural and cultural influences on one of the UK’s most attractive and popular National Parks.

Level Three: Overseas

This provides an exciting opportunity to study contemporary landscapes overseas. Destinations vary from year to year and have included Barcelona, Copenhagen, Netherlands, New York and Paris. This experience helps to establish an international perspective on landscape architecture and garden design which provides a wealth of inspiration for design projects.
