Headingley Experimental Gardens

Within the green woodland setting of Headingley Campus, the mature gardens and bio diverse wildlife habitats of the Experimental Gardens and Landscape Resource Centre offer students invaluable ‘hands on’ experience of planting design, ecology, environmental art and construction processes.  Visitors to the gardens can enjoy the following:

Named Plant Collection

Students can learn new plants and appreciate how they grow in association with other species in the continually evolving labelled plant collection.

Experimental Gardens

Students at Leeds Met are encouraged to become involved in the work of the gardens through volunteer work and in their design modules where they will have to chance to plant out their designs and experiment with construction techniques and materials.  Students also use the gardens for photography, sketching and environmental art which can be seen in the grounds.

Wildlife Garden

An area of the gardens is given over to wildlife and the study of native species.  The large pond contains many fascinating creatures including a large newt population.  In 2009 the wild life area will be the focus of a major student project creating an outdoor classroom for school children to come and learn about subjects ranging from ecology and nature to healthy lifestyles and art.

BBQs and Activity Days

The Experimental Gardens are also used just for pleasure.  Both the Landscape Architecture/Garden Design courses and others use the grounds for activity days, team building and social gatherings whilst many people like to just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Outside groups/courses

The lecture room and grounds here at the Experimental Gardens are regularly used by outside groups such as the Society of Garden Designers for meetings and to run their own short courses.  We also like to encourage schools and community groups to use the area.  If you would like to hire the facilities or think that we could help you in any other way please contact Jo Jolley at j.jolley@leedsmet .ac.uk or call 0113 81227475.  Catering can be provided.
