Edwin Knighton is Head of Landscape Architecture. He is a Chartered Landscape Architect and Urban Designer with substantial practice-based experience in public, private and voluntary sectors. He is also Course Leader for MA Urban Environmental Design and teaches on all courses. His special interests urban space and design education. As an experienced and qualified academic, he is committed to developing quality courses and promoting the group's activities.
Sandra Ashton is a lecturer in Landscape Architecture and Garden Art & Design. She is a graduate of Garden Art and Design from Leeds Met. Since graduating she worked in landscape private practice and has taught Urban Forestry at Askham Bryan College, York. Sandra was formerly a research assistant at Leeds Met where she investigated the experience of wooded nature in urban settings.
Mark Burgess is a chartered architect, town planner and practising urban designer who mainly teaches on the postgraduate Urban Design courses. He has worked in the public and private sectors; current work includes regeneration, design frameworks, space improvements and design guidance. Currently leading a multi-disciplinary design team at Leeds City Council, Marks’ joint role provides valuable practice-based experience for students. The Leeds City Centre Urban Design Strategy, winner of commendation - RTPI National Awards for Planning Achievement, is an example of our creative collaboration.
Currently Principal Landscape Architect at Bureau Veritas' Runcorn office, Ian haspracticed in England and Scotland, specialising in inner cities, housing regeneration, land reclamation, leisure and sports projects. His personal commitment to community architecture has been a major influence, believing that investment in environmental improvements must link to wider social and economic initiatives to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of people's lives. Ian is a lecturer in professional practice and a design critic for the postgraduate landscape architecture course.
Marilyn Elm is course leader for courses based at RHS garden at Harlow Carr in Harrogate. She also teaches on the landscape architecture and garden design courses based in Leeds. As a qualified landscape architect and interior designer, she
has worked in local government, new town and private practice. She has extensive experience as a lecturer and
a special interest in garden history, and is a founder member of The Yorkshire Gardens Trust.
Trudi Entwistle co-ordinates BA Level 1 and teaches on BA (Hons)Landscape Architecture and interdisciplinary modules, bridging the gap between the process of landscape art and design. Trudi is a practising Public Artist whose commissions and exhibitions have taken her to varied locations both nationally and internationally, especially to the Far East in Japan and Korea.
Penny Gardiner is Course Leader for the Graduate Certificate Conversion Course. She is an experienced Landscape Architect with local authority and private practice experience. Her current teaching is focused on art and design-based modules as well as students’ elective modules. Penny is also a skilled textile artist and has exhibited widely in Yorkshire. She is currently working on a community project with Booth Town Partnership and Bankfield Museum, Halifax.
Fleure Gething is Course Leader for the MA/ Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture. She is an experienced Chartered Landscape Architect and Urban Designer, having worked in the private and public sectors in London, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire. Fleure teaches in all levels of our courses. Her specialist areas of interest include plants, urban design and design processes to create high quality environments for people.
Richard Hare is a lecturer in drawing, design and public involvement in environmental work. Since qualifying in landscape architecture and art and design his projects have included work with sculptor David Nash, small scale design work and also large scale landscape management plans in the UK and Denmark. Richard is also a visiting tutor at our partner universities in Copenhagen and SLU Alnarp in Sweden.
Steve has a degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape architecture from Leeds met. He lecturers in landscape architecture and garden art and design in levels 1, 2 and 3 and specialises in planting design and construction. He is also developing our experimental gardens at our Headingley Campus. His main interests are in horticulture and the design of thematic environments including theme parks, zoos, and botanical gardens. He has practiced as a landscape architect in UK, USA and Asia. His portfolio includes forest parks, infrastructure, urban design, private gardens and themed resorts.
Andy Millard is Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture and Garden Art & Design courses. He has a PhD in estuarine ecology, extensive professional experience in education and lectures in landscape science and GIS on landscape, garden design, planning and human geography courses. His main research interests are in urban ecology. He serves on the Faculty IT committee, has a lifelong interest in nature conservation and has served on the Council of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
Emma Oldroyd is a Landscape Architect with project and research experience in sustainability issues, landscape planning, and design.Emma has worked upon a wide range of design projects at a range of scales from planning to construction in London and the south-east and has significant project experience in developing community participation programmes. Emma has an MA in Landscape Architecture and her award winning dissertation focussed on developing a process to aid sustainable landscape design. Emma is Second Year Coordinator and teaches across all levels in the undergraduate and Masters courses.
Chris Royffe is Head of the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design and Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Society. Chris is a Chartered Landscape Architect and Urban Designer with many years experience in higher education, design practice and applied research. With a particular interest in urban landscape and garden design he mainly contributes to the postgraduate programme. He promotes interdisciplinary practice and supports the design and community led approaches that characterise landscape at Leeds.
Deborah Samuel is a lecturer in Landscape Architecture, design & community project. She is a graduate of Landscape Architecture from Leeds Met and subsequently has worked in the voluntary sector on a number of urban design projects. More recently she was working on a research project which critically reviewed 25 years of community design projects undertaken by staff and students of the Landscape Architecture Group in the Leeds region.
Alan Simson co-ordinates landscape research and teaches on all our courses. Alan is a chartered landscape architect and urban forester. He gained extensive professional experience in Telford new town and private practice. He has led EU research projects on urban forestry and is joint co-ordinator of IUFRO’s European Forum on Urban Forestry. He is a member of the Forestry Commission’s Regional Advisory Committee and chairs the Steering Committee of the White Rose Forest.
Lindsay is an urban design tutor and community planning consultant. He specialises in urban design analysis, design guidance, spatial masterplans and development proposals for sensitive sites. Lindsay works closely with local authorities, private sector and Yorkshire Forward RDA on the evaluation of major projects and initiatives. He also trains officers and politicians in the UK and abroad in best practice principles for community engagement and in making good places.
