Leeds Rhinos followed in the footsteps of sporting heroes such as Brendan Foster MBE, Dame Mary Peters DBE and Ian McGeechan OBE, who each received honorary doctorates during the University’s graduation ceremonies in July 2004.

Gary Hetherington, chief executive of Leeds Rugby, said: "This is a day of celebration. It is a great honour for me to be accepting this on behalf of the Leeds Rhinos' players, staff and everyone connected with the Leeds Rhinos. The strength of any organisation is the people within it... Leeds Rhinos is indebted to many groups of people, first and foremost the fans... and partners such as Leeds Met."

Gary Hetherington continued to say that Leeds Met and the Rhinos have much in common, such as supporting young people with ambition and talent and working in a competitive environment, and so both need to be creative, innovative and lead from the front. He commented: "Both are striving to create an organisation of world-class status."
He finished by saying: "I'd like to thank Leeds Met for their partnership, their support and for their creativity within it."
