David Green

David Green graduated with BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design

David Green, a 46 year-old father of four, was forced to give up work in the building trade ten years ago due to a serious back injury.

He had given up on university at the age of 18 due to the pressures of the written assignments. He felt that his chances of regaining any career were over when he was hit by a car seven years ago, suffering a serious head injury which left him unable to concentrate.

Four years ago he started a BA (Hons) 3D Design at Leeds Met. He said he struggled at first with his written work. Despite the creative design aspect of David’s work being outstanding, in his first year he was diagnosed with dyslexia and received support from the University.

During his final year project, he designed an ecologically sound, safe shower for children. His youngest child, Dan, became very involved in the design, which has been short-listed for the Daily Mail Home Exhibition this year. Dan, 11, is proud of his father’s achievement and feels that his efforts have been inspirational.

David feels that he now has the skills and the confidence to apply for a job as a 3D Design and Craft Co-ordinator, and is receiving help and advice from Leeds Met Careers service and his department.

Wendy Mayfield, David’s course leader, is overjoyed for him and said: "His career has developed so much during his four years with us. The staff have never failed to be impressed by David's enthusiasm and optimism in overcoming many obstacles over the last four years. Simply awarding him a degree classification doesn’t seem an adequate reflection of what he has achieved."
