Monica retired in July 2006 after 21 years of teaching on the speech and language therapy course. She has since continued her involvement in the speech and language therapy area through some part-time teaching, clinical tutoring of SLT students, involvement with a parent group for children with special needs and |
most recently being a part-time researcher in the area of stammering. This research project is sponsored by the Dominic Barker Trust and aims to assess the usefulness of a telephone assistive device for adults who stammer. The device gives altered auditory feedback to the speaker as he/she speaks into the telephone. It has been found that some people who stammer are more fluent when they hear delayed or frequency-shifted feedback of their own speech. This research will assess people speaking on the phone at two time points before using the device and at two points after they have been supplied with the device. Monica hopes to complete the project and the write-up by August 2008 and present the information gained by that point at the Oxford Dysfluency Conference in June 2008. She is being supported by Dr Sarah James of the speech and language therapy group and has a comfortable desk and computer in D901. |
