Reflections |
Reflections this week mark the accession of ten new countries
to the European Union on 1st May.
Monday 26th April
I am 26 years old, from Slovakia and have been living
in the U.K. for nearly two years. Slovakia is a young, small country
in the heart of Europe with just over 5 million inhabitants which
separated from Czechoslovakia in January 1993. Visitors cannot
believe how beautiful it is or why it is not recognised as a popular
tourist destination. Medieval cities and towns with history dating
back to 7th century will make sightseers’ heads spin. Huge
forests, high mountains, rivers, lakes with sandy beaches offer
loads of activities for sports and fun throughout summer and winter.
Slovakians love sport; the national sport is ice hockey. In its
short history Slovakia managed to win the gold medal in the IIHF
World Championship two years ago.
At present it seems that many young people are escaping from Slovakia.
The truth is that Slovakia is struggling with economic problems
(unemployment and inflation for example). But Slovakians are very
proud of their small country and hope that it has the potential
to become strong and rich in the future. We believe that Slovakia
will bring a bit of freshness to the “old west European countries” because
of its cultural difference and young market.
