Reflections |
Reflections this week mark the accession of ten new countries
to the European Union on 1st May.
Tuesday 27th April
Poland is a proud nation, which now will be a part of the European
family. During the Communist era, when travel was restricted, Polish
resources were diverted, houses were built to specific regulations,
the state owned large farms, salt and coal mines were owned by
the Eastern bloc. The Communist elite enjoyed the privileges of
an affluent society, whilst the rest of the country struggled to
survive. Education was of paramount importance for an improved
standard of living. People looked towards the affluent West and
dreamed of riches and other lifestyles. Now the time has come when
Poles can live their dreams.
Freedom of movement will enable the sharing of knowledge of professionals
and skilled tradesmen, of student exchanges, tourism, sport, company
contracts and sponsorships which will enable people to work across
borders. I strongly believe that it will not only be one-way traffic.
Many people think that Poland is a cold and desolate place but
it is a beautiful country with Mazowsze, the Polish lake district,
to the north east, the Baltic sea in the north, the Carpathian
and Tatar mountains in the south. There is an abundance of heritage,
culture and traditions in every corner of the country.
