Reflections |
Reflections this week mark the accession of ten new countries
to the European Union on 1st May.
Wednesday 28th April
In my country, the Czech Republic, it is incredible to see how
much has changed since 1989. We have been experiencing a period
of very dynamic development in all spheres. Joining the EU will
mean not only further growth of the Czech economy, increase in
trade and more opportunities for the Czech market but also free
travel and movement of the workforce. The last two are especially
important for me. I am looking forward to losing immigration procedures
of non-EU members: explaining where you are going, why, for how
long, and proving it all by loads of documents, which are then
examined suspiciously.
I do not think the influx of job-seekers from the accession countries
will be as huge as it is often portrayed by the media. However,
exchanging, gaining and applying experience internationally will
contribute to overall professional skills development. Czech professionals
have much to offer. My wish is that, as a member of the EU, the
Czech Republic will get more attention from other countries. In
my opinion, it has been rather undermined and neglected so far
(for example, it is still often referred to as Czechoslovakia)
despite its advantageous geographical position and all the potential
it offers.
