International Reflections

Reflections this week mark the accession of ten new countries to the European Union on 1st May.

Thursday 29th April

Malta is one of the 10 countries joining the EU on the 1st May. Consisting of three islands with a combined land mass of 316 sq. km and population of approximately 390,000 it is the smallest of the countries joining as part of the current enlargement. For the Maltese citizens who have supported the EU accession it has been a long wait. The original application was lodged in 1990 and later frozen due to a change in government policy. For many Maltese, joining the EU almost legitimises what they always felt - European. With a great part of Europe holding EU membership, the impact of such a small country not being involved is felt intensely.

The islands have a great attitude in that they are both proud and humble of their culture and heritage yet display a great appreciation of the achievements of other countries. Overall, I think Malta is proud to be involved in the decision making process and part of such a large union whilst maintaining its independence. The festivities, which commenced on 16th April, will officially end on 9th May 2004 with the main event being fireworks at the Grand Harbour on the eve of its accession.
