This week’s reflections mark the formal inauguration of
Leeds Met South Asia on Friday 22nd April.
Tuesday 19 April 2005
Sanjay Nagar, tucked away on the outskirts of Ahmednagar City
in India, consists of people from diverse social and religious
backgrounds. Thirty families with a leprosy background have been
provided two-room tenements. Few visitors found their way here
and, though some support was extended, sustained help was difficult
to come by. The slow progress and failures often led to loss of
interest from agencies.
| At the time when all seemed lost, I was introduced to Leeds
Met through Leeds Met South Asia and learnt that the University
would be interested to help in some way – particularly
for children and their education. Catherine Pearson visited
Sanjay Nagar last year. She was enthralled by her interaction
with the vibrant children. Before her arrival, she sent gifts
for the children and on her return Christmas presents, which
they cherished greatly. She also spoke to us about raising
funds through her Events Management students for the project.
We were extremely pained to hear about her sad death – the
children, without exception, were wishing for her speedy recovery
and had made get-well cards. I shall conclude by twisting the
well knowing saying: “Catherine came and saw and was
conquered by the children of Sanjay Nagar.” |
