Different cultural backgrounds have always existed, and people
have always thought about phenomena, attitudes or even behaviours
that were unusual in other cultures. Such encounters, today, are
almost part of our everyday life with the advance of ICT, e-learning,
e-commerce, better transportation networks and movement of people
all over the world. At the same time, these changes help the interchange
between cultures and the development of a more open, multinational
approach. Nevertheless, it is important in all we do and say to
respect the individual and their culture as well as to share experiences
and knowledge.
As a Greek staff member I am impressed by Leeds Met’s aspiration
to create a University that fully appreciates and respects the
individual, their culture, religion and background. Furthermore,
based on my experience I feel that Leeds Met affirms fundamental
human values such as, honour, pride and compassion and this is
something that will be reflected in our students. Even though increasing
cultural diversity poses a challenge for Universities and staff,
it is an opportunity for Leeds Met to demonstrate commitment to
the continuous development of an environment in which such diversity
is respected and people from all over the world are made welcome.
