Our Scholarship Winners:

Desiree Joy Alcala

Course: MSc Management
Home: Ortigas Business District, Pasig City, Philippines

Why did you choose to study in the UK?
I like the culture of England. People are generally polite and the place has still much of nature preserved…plenty of greens. The architectural designs are superb and I still have to visit the British Museum, which is amongst those that have largest collection in the world.  I think the UK is one of the best places to go to if you want to learn not only about your course but about the world.

Why did you choose to study at Leeds Met?
Leeds Met came as one of the most recommended universities when it comes to the quality of learning, facilities and affordability of fees.  When I learned that they now have come up with a new facility called the Rose Bowl in the centre of the City of Leeds, I became more confident that I chose the right school because they never stop improving their services.

What encouraged you to apply for the scholarship?
When I read about the scholars on Leeds Met’s official website, I thought to myself, if they made it, I may just be able to make it too.

What did you have to do for the scholarship?
Applicants were asked to choose from three topics and I chose the one closest to my heart so at least I can write with passion. On the essay, I described my life’s journey and how my struggles inspired me to positively affect other people’s lives.  I am taking up MSc Management and hope I can create more income opportunities for my countrymen.

How did you feel when you found out you won the scholarship?
I was overjoyed.  Who wouldn’t be with the recession happening globally? The scholarship has helped me a great deal in meeting the financial requirements of the course.

What does this scholarship mean to you?
I feel it has opened a new chapter in my career.  It has increased my perspective about business…to think globally, to reach international standards.  Having finished my intermediary course many years ago, I am very excited to learn new things; what’s current and keep up with new business trends.

What are you most looking forward to at Leeds Met?
My graduation! I know it will be difficult path because I still have to report to the office back home via online conferencing but Leeds Met has provided all the support I need to keep up with the workload…from 24-hour online libraries, to online learning tools, to tutorial support and more!

What was your first impression of Leeds Met?
The university provides the atmosphere for serious learning but it has not forgotten to incorporate fun into our programs.

What has been your most rewarding experience so far since arriving at Leeds Met?
I have learned to understand other cultures and made friends with a number of them. There are many international students at Leeds Met.

How did your family feel about it?
My kids were very proud of me when they learned that I won the scholarship and that made it even more meaningful. I know this degree will open more opportunities for me and therefore rebound to benefit my children.

What are your aspirations for the future?
I would like to end up a more efficient business executive and become excellent in whatever venture I’d pursue.
