Ang, Eng Chai

Eng Chai is a 32-year-old undergraduate studying Electronics and Electrical Engineering for a Bachelors degree at Leeds Met.
His schooling at home was conducted in English, so when he was thinking about further study abroad the UK was the natural choice – particularly as British qualifications are recognised throughout the world. ”Since the education system in my home country is basically based on the UK’s system it is easier to cope here in my studies, for example in technical terms and grammar,” said Eng.
“Leeds Met is providing me with applicable, marketable skills and knowledge. As we students will be facing the real world very soon in our career, these are essential to us. Also, the course fee is reasonable as compared to other chartered universities. And, Leeds is a big city, with a lot of opportunities, whether to buy daily food, study materials or even to find a job – all are within easy reach.
“I would rate the facilities at Leeds Met as excellent. For example, I don’t own a PC, because I can easily access the computers in the Learning Centre and the Labs. All are using the latest Pentium 4 computers with Windows XP. I can use a computer from very early in the morning until late evening every day and there are always enough for student use. So far I have never seen anyone having to take a queue! All the classrooms have LCD projectors and OHP projectors and the teaching aids are even more high tech in the lecture theatres. There is even a microwave for public use for students to heat their own food or drinks in the cafeteria.
“I have quite enjoyed my stay here, even from the first day! The best part is that I can play hard too. Apart from my studies I take part in the activities that are organised by the Students Union and the International Office. The most memorable parts have been trips to York and to the Yorkshire Dales. My hobby is meeting people. This is simply because we can share our knowledge, experience and thinking by meeting different people. I also like attending other training and recruitment fairs for the same reason. By joining in I try to explore a lot of new stuff and not to miss out on anything.
“I share rented off-campus accommodation in Harehills, a district not far from the University, with a few other course-mates who all come from Malaysia. We live happily by sharing our food bills, rent, housekeeping, and, essentially the ‘happiness moments in life’. This home is so much a source of ‘happy family’ to us in the UK. And the most valuable thing about our accommodation is that it is cheap – less than £900 per academic year per person.
“Leeds seems like a very well managed city with clean streets, well decorated with seasonal flowers and lights. The City Council keeps all the leisure facilities and public infrastructure in good order and are even having success with the Neighbourhood Watch schemes that help us all to have peace of mind in residential areas. We can get good public transport by bus or train to any place in the UK easily, and as I mentioned earlier, get a large variety of food with reasonable prices.
“So far, I am so happy and fully satisfied with the course I am studying now. My teachers are dedicated and give much support and guidance. Besides that, other staff from the Leslie Silver International Faculty, student services, careers and guidance offices are all very helpful and approachable.”
