LMU recently launched its World-Wide Web Service. The service contains information for and about the University, and is available to anyone whose PC is connected to the University network and has the appropriate software (contact your local Computing Help Desk if you would like to ask for the software to be installed). Please note that installation of this software does not give you access to the rest of the Web: it will only let you look at local information.
It's quite easy to get carried away by the possibilities of the Internet, and what you can see on the Information Superhighway. What most people forget is that someone has to put out information for others to see; and, that information has to be accurate and up-to-date. Our service holds information supplied by the people who actually have the information, rather than passed on and edited down. In this way, anything you do see should be the most up-to-date information available.
Anyone can write a Web document, but in order to get it on to the Web server (the computer that holds the Web documents), you need to go through one of the Web co-ordinators. As the service develops, co-ordinators are appearing in each School, and in most of the other centres (e.g. Human Resources, LSS, Students' Union). Almost anything can be put on to the Web server: staff lists, conference information, departmental newsletters (including this one; see http://www.lmu.ac.uk/lss/newsletter/feb96/). It does have to be related to the work of the University, however, so if you want to create, for instance, the Wallace & Gromit Home Page - sorry, you can't!
My role in this is three-fold. Firstly, to ensure co-ordination and co-operation between the different parts of the University. For example; the Prospectus is already there, so no-one else need do it. Secondly, to ensure that documents obey certain "house style" guidelines, so that we present a common "look and feel". Thirdly, to ensure that non-University information doesn't slip through the net (no pun intended).
If anyone asks you, the University's Home Page is http://www.lmu.ac.uk/ (follow the link to see what it looks like!).
If you want to know more from me, call me on extn 3844, or send me email.
Gary TaylorThe next LSS Event will focus on the relationship between the Web and teaching, information and corporate issues. The event will be held on the morning of Wednesday March 20th on the Beckett Park Campus. Please look out for further information about this in the near future.
