Nanjing is the famous ancient capital of Jiangsu Province and an important riverside city. Nanjing is ranked the fifth most powerful city in China. Zhejiang Province is one of the richest and most populous (55 million) regions in China. Its capital Hangzhou is the political, economic and cultural centre of Zhejiang Province. The major industry sectors in the region are textiles machinery, chemicals, medicine, light industry and food processing. Shanghai is one of the major industrial bases in China. Since the beginning of the 1990s its goal has been to become an international economic, financial and trade centre.

The manufacturing industry in Shanghai has attracted a large amount of foreign investments, particularly in the fields of automobile, telecommunication, power station equipment and large-scale machinery, steel, petrochemicals and fine chemical processing and household appliances.
