Designer Guidelines

Module designers (aka primary designers) are responsible for all aspects of the module. They may allocate a task to a shared designer or teaching assistant where appropriate but checking that the task has been completed remains the responsibility of the designer.

The following sections state what each user can do:

Module Designers Only

  • Addition and removal of Shared Designer access to the module
  • Definition of the file structure and naming convention, stating the chosen HTML editor and deciding who will take the task of editing which files

Module Designers and Shared Designers

  • Addition and removal of Teaching Assistant Access to the module
  • Creation of all module content/tools
  • Checking (via a guest login) the display and working of all aspects of the module
  • Monitoring and regulating the use of all communication tools within the module
  • Creation and storage of module backups (see below)
  • Setting of selective release of areas of the module to students
  • Setting of limited access to areas of the module for the guest account

Module Designers, Shared Designers and Teaching Assistants

  • Checking that the correct students are enrolled on the module and requesting any changes to the School Helpdesk user or the Administrator
  • Marking of all non-computer-graded tests and assignments
  • Collation and down-loading of results from WebCT for analysis (e.g. in Excel) or import into another suitable system (e.g. SIS/Banner)

Notes on Module Backups

Primary designers and shared designers can all create backups within the module. This backs up all module files, layouts, settings and users. There is a limit of three (3) backups per module that can be stored within WebCT. These backups can be downloaded and stored on disc (A:\, C:\ or the network) if more than three backups are required. Backups can also be uploaded into the module and restored to convert the module back to an earlier version.

WebCT creates a unique name for each backup; this name should not be changed. We recommend that you record the name of the backup and a few notes about the state of the module for future reference.
Once your module is populated with Students and Teaching Assistants we do not recommend the restoration of backups taken before the students were added, or backups created on a different server. Doing this will cause all Students and Teaching Assistants to be become unallocated and require the module to be re-populated.

A server backup is taken every night in case the designer backups fail.
