Glossary of Terms

COMMAND DEFINITION
Add Page or Tool A function available through the navigation bar that allows you to add new pages or tools (whiteboard, chat facility etc.) to your course.
Adding Student Record Students need to be included in the global database so that they can be registered on your course. They can be added individually or imported from a text file.
Administrator Manages the installation and maintenance of the WebCT software on the server. Administers the global database, environment settings, courses and users
Announcements Information displayed on my WebCT from the administrator.
Background Image Modifying the background image allows you to have a suitable picture as the background for that particular page of your course. (E.g. rainbow stripes for the diffraction of light).
Backup You can create a backup of your course for future reference or for restoring should the need arise. A maximum of two backups can be stored on WebCT but they can be downloaded and uploaded to allow for historical archiving and retrieval.
Banner An image (default or self-selected) or text selected to appear at the top of the Course Area, above the upper text block.
Breadcrumbs Horizontal listing of the path of screens that a user has visited. All previous items in the breadcrumb are links back to those pages.
Bookmarks Links to locations. Global ones are set by the administrator, personal ones are set by users.
Chat Facilities Online interactive discussion groups.
Clipboard Temporary storage area that can be used to hold information before it is used, e.g. Student name list from the global database into a mail message
Content Area Displays the course material.
Content Assistant Links to the e-learning hub, www.webct.com, where you can search for course content.
Content Resources Only available on version 3.1 and higher, a link to the Online Teaching and Learning community on the e-learning hub, www.webct.com.
Control Panel Provides easy access to course creation and management functions.
Course Appearance Changing colours, background images and icon styles can alter the overall visual appearance of the course
Course Map This view is available to you and your students enabling you to see the whole course structure on one page. The course elements are hyperlinks, allowing you to go directly to any place in the course.
Course Menu Provides easy access to the course elements, available to designers and to students.
Deleting The removal of information, NB Some information must be deleted in a specific order, e.g. students from courses before students from the global database.
Deny Access Access to students and teaching assistants to your course can be temporarily disabled while you update or amend the course.
Designer Map A single screen displaying links to all of the tools and utilities available in your WebCT course.
Designer Options Alternative to View allows you to modify tools, pages or content.
Designers Create and modify courses after the administrator creates them. Designers can also allocate shared designers to help with course creation.
Downloading Description & Uploading: Transferring information from WebCT to disk and from disk to WebCT. This process can be applied to student records; backups; teaching assistants.
Global Database Database of all users, courses and access levels.
Glossary Dictionary of specific terminology, a glossary creator can be found on www.webct.com.
Group Generator Wizard to help in the set-up of groups.
Help A context-sensitive online help facility.
Helpdesk users Assists the Administrator.
Hide/Reveal A simple and easy way of denying certain elements of the course to students.
Hit Counter A device for recording the number of times that page has been accessed.
Homepage An area for students to customise for displaying information about them selves as required.
Icons A pictographic link.
Links You can customise the titles of links to tools, pages or URL's. You can also select whether a link will appear as text, icon or both as well as being able to select an image for the icon and when it will become available to students.
Mail Mail can be sent to individual students, all students or selected students based on a search.
Managing Students Organising the student record table to suit your own preferences, certain field's e.g. WebCT ID etc cannot be renamed or deleted.
Menu Bar The menu bar runs across the very top of your WebCT screen and contains links to my WebCT, Resume Course, Course Map, Content Resources and Help. It also shows your current location via the breadcrumbs and indicates weather you are in View or Designer Options.
Modify Page or Tool Modify allows you to make changes to existing pages or tools as your course evolves.
My WebCT This is the opening page when you first log-in to WebCT and contains links to all your courses plus announcements, bookmarks and a link to WebCT's e-learning hub www.webct.com.
Navigating Student Records The art of locating the correct information about one or more students in the student records.
Navigation Bar Contains the Show/Hide Navigation toggle, Control Panel and Course Menu section.
Page Format Adding a banner, changing the background image, adding a hit counter or re-arranging the layout of the links will change the format of the homepage.
Presentation Groups Students can be grouped together to create presentation groups, assigning group discussion topics and sending group mail messages.
Registration Students need to be entered into the global database before they can be registered onto your course.
Releasing Information When course material is added to your course it can be set to not visible. Students will not be able to see or access this information until you release it. This release of information is usually regarding grades or test results from the student records.
Reset Course You can reset certain aspects of the course through the course design options e.g. student grades, assignments.
Restoring If you have created a backup of your course you can restore a previous version. This will overwrite all current course contents.
Resume Course This link allows students to resume the course where they finished at the last session.
Self-Registration If enabled a student can register for our course when they access it. Specific information can also be requested at registration.
Shared Designer Access You can grant another user shared designer access to your course. The shared designer has the same access as you except they cannot grant shared designer access rights.
Show/Hide Navigation A toggle switch that allows you to hide the Navigation bar and expand the Content area and vice versa.
Student Information Contact Information, grades, presentation information etc is all information that can be kept in the Student information.
Students Views course content, takes quizzes, posts messages and, if allowed, can add or modify content in the student presentation area.
Teaching Assistants Assists the Designer by evaluating and grading assignments and quizzes. They can also change student grades.
Text blocks There are two types of text block, upper and lower. These add blocks of text to the homepage, upper is like a header and will appear at the top of the homepage, lower is like a footer and will appear at the bottom of the homepage.
Track Pages Track pages gives you the ability to see how often students have accessed each page of your course, sent messages to discussion groups etc. This facility can also be made available to the students.
Uploading See Downloading
View Switching to 'View' mode will allow you to see how the course will appear to a student. On some screens 'View' only approximates what a student will see. To see the actual student view, log on to your course as a student.
WebCT Users There are five types of WebCT User. Administrator; Helpdesk User; Designer; Teaching Assistant; Student.
Welcome Page A page that can be viewed by anyone that can be used to describe or relay information about your course.
Whiteboard A program that allows users to create and combine text and images for storing and retrieval.
