Assessment, Learning & Teaching Reflections

Tuesday 6th December

The bright lights shining into my eyes made it hard to see properly, although it made it easy for others to observe me. In the half shadows away from the lights, I could see people watching. Were they watching me…?

Numbers were on my side however, and collectively we stood, shoulder to shoulder, over a hundred strong. Reinforced by the outstanding Black Dyke Band and supported by four wonderful Opera North soloists we launched into the Hallelujah Chorus. It had been a long weekend of learning. It had been a wonderful weekend of learning, from finding my voice to reading a score, from using my voice to listening to others. The weekend was a wonderful opportunity to work together and to learn together in the company of friends, colleagues and university partners. Choral singers from the Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and the Bradford Chorale had joined in the teaching of Andrew Dean by leading and guiding chorale novitiates through the sublime score. An assessment of the situation was required. As the last notes of the Amen Chorus faded away into the night a thunder of applause raised the roof. The cheering crowd rose as one and we all felt like champions.
