Taking the plunge for Macmillan Cancer Relief

01 April 2003

Rachael DixeyRachael Dixey, Principal Lecturer in Health Promotion here at Leeds Met, recently lead a team of colleagues in a Butlins swimathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The swimathon, a national event, took place at 550 pools across the UK and 40,000 people took part. Rachael and her team participated at Leeds Met’s pool at Beckett Park.

Rachael, a former breast cancer patient, had nothing but praise for the “wonderful” care she received during her treatment for the disease just over a year ago: “Although I have taught nurses for more than 10 years, I now really know what they do. I have been on the receiving end of caring and compassion that I did not know existed” she said.

Rachael was so impressed to read about the Swimathon and the challenge taken up by so many to help raise funds to provide more Macmillan Nurses to provide that level of care, that she was inspired to play her part in the world’s largest fundraising swimming challenge to raise sponsorship.

The event expects to raise over £2m for the charity and in doing so hopes to surpass the £20m mark for the total amount raised since its inception 17 years ago. Event president Duncan Goodhew sent his best wishes to Rachel and all those taking part prior to the week long event stating he was sure the event would be a “splashing success!”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can send cheques made payable to Macmillan Cancer Relief to her at the School Office, Room G06, QSH, City Campus or call in to make a donation. Rachael and the rest of the team would like to thank all the staff at the Beckett Park pool for opening especially for them and providing a life guard.
