Pip Trevorrow, Beccy Watson and Kevin Sinfield

Leeds Met lecturers Beccy Watson and Pip Trevorrow were treated to a surprise visit by Leeds Rhinos captain and Leeds Met student Kevin Sinfield, as they prepare to participate in next week’s London Marathon. The rugby league star offered his support to the pair, who will be running for the Save The Rhinos charity, during a fundraising session to raise awareness of the charity’s work with the endangered Sumatran rhino. The pair are aiming to raise £1,000 each on behalf of the charity.

Beccy Watson and Pip TrevorrowBeccy, principal lecturer in the School of Leisure and Sport Management, and Pip, who is a research assistant and lecturer in the School of Information Management, have been planning for the marathon since November. Their gruelling schedule involves up to six days a week of training, with the duo able to make use of Leeds Met’s world-class sporting facilities.

Beccy, who will be competing in a marathon for the first time, said: “In taking part, it’s important to reflect the Carnegie spirit of sport for the benefit of fun and community.”

Competing alongside the pair will be Leeds Met student Brian Pennells, who is running to raise money for Whiz-kids, a charity providing customised wheelchairs and specialised mobility equipment for disabled children in the UK. Brian, who is in the final year of an Events Management degree, has already been pledged £1,000 in sponsorship. He has also received support from Leeds Met, including nutritional and training advice from staff at the Carnegie Sports Centre at Leeds Met.
