Report on the Board of Governors’ meeting 13 December 2005

The Board of Governors’ last formal meeting of 2005 commenced with an informative presentation from the acting Executive Director of the North Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council, Liz Burdett, who briefed governors on government initiatives that impact on further education generally and Harrogate College more specifically. The presentation concluded that overall the North Yorkshire LSC is reassured that good governance is in place with regard to Harrogate College, and that they were satisfied with progress on implementation of the improvement plan.

Other agenda items included approval of the annual financial statements, endorsed by our auditors, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and annual reports on health and safety and the performance of university subsidiary companies. Director of Finance, Stephen Willis updated governors on the latest position on estate developments, including discussions with the leaders of Leeds City Council for an iconic building to be built in the Civic Quarter of the university.

Preparation for the next National and Annual student surveys were described by Joy Kumar, Director for Student Centred Change Management. She advised the Board that she was working closely with the students’ union and plans that are already underway for post-survey events that will inform students of the results and how they are influencing change within the university.

The meeting concluded with the Vice-Chancellor’s report which included highlights from the recent and forthcoming university calendar. Professor Lee’s report also included a presentation from Dr Jill Taylor, Principal Lecturer, School of Health and Social Sciences, on the benefits of ‘blended learning’ and the importance of technology as a method of teaching and engaging students.

The meeting was followed by the Chancellor’s Dinner. Governors’ joined the Students’ Union and Athletics Union sabbatical officers and senior officers to hear the Chancellor, Brendan Foster, emphasise that enterprises, from businesses to universities, need energy and vision.
