Christmas arrived early at Leeds Met as a number of teams sealed victory in their leagues. Congratulations to Men’s Basketball, Men’s Football 2nd, Women’s Hockey 1st, Netball 2nd , Men’s Rugby Union 1st & 2nd and Women’s Rugby Union, as despite the fact that they have 2 fixtures to play they cannot be caught by any other team. Only 16 fixtures were actually played yesterday as travel difficulties, frozen pitches, walkovers and rearrangements sidelined the other 14 fixtures. But for those that did play, many teams provided a goal scoring flurry, finishing the term’s fixtures in some style! The teams achieved 17 wins, 1 draw and only 3 losses with 9 fixtures to be played at a later date.
Rugby
The performance of the day must go to Men’s Rugby Union 1st team as they showed why they are the League winners of Tier 1A as they brushed aside a Lancaster team that were unable to score a single point in reply to 54 points scored by Leeds Met. The team completely outclassed the opposition with a fantastic display of rugby. As a team they were just awesome and they controlled the match throughout, seemingly scoring at will. This team will be force to be reckoned with when they go into the knockout competition. To add to this triumph the 2nd team defeated varsity rivals (35 – 10) to win their league and the Women’s team given a walkover by Liverpool JM were also able to celebrate victory in their league.
Football
In Football the teams have found the winning formula as the Men’s 1st team beat league leaders Manchester 3 – 0 to go top for the 1st time this year. The 2nd team endured a game of 2 halves as the 1st half was nip and tuck with York, going in at half time 2 – 2. But an inspirational team talk and concentration in the second half they pulled 2 goals out of the hat to win 4 – 2. Despite protestations from TASC they did field a team that pushed the 3rd team all the way but Leeds Met came out victorious 2 - 1. The Women 1st team also had a fruitful trip to Manchester, going one better than their home result, as this time they managed to put 7 goals past a poor Manchester side that seem to be on the verge of relegation. Goals from Caz Webster (2), Sarah Dobby (2), Carla Baxby, Jen Taylor and Katie Mathews with only 1 goal conceded gave the team their biggest win of the season (7 – 1) and their only away win. With MMU Cheshire only managing a draw with Birmingham the girls move into second spot behind Loughborough, that uncharacteristically lost to DMU Bedford (3 – 1).
Hockey
In Hockey the Women’s Hockey 1st team recorded another impressive victory away at Durham (5 – 1) with Team captain Hannah Norman scoring 3 goals and Bex Mitchell and newly promoted Kim Carney also on the scoresheet. Player of the match was however a defender Sarah Darrington, as she made some crucial tackles and never stopped working throughout the match. The 2nd team seeking revenge against York St John had a real ‘dingdong’ with prolific goal scoring from both sides. It ended in a draw 6 – 6, but the girls will be kicking themselves as for most of the game they were the dominant force. Disappointment for the men as they had to concede the 3rd team game due to a lack of players and it was a wasted trip up to Durham for the 1st team, as by the time they were due to play at 4pm, the pitch was frozen The 2nd team struggled against an unbeaten Newcastle 3rd team going down 6 – 2.
Tennis
The Men’s Tennis 1st team regained their composure this week to whitewash Newcastle. But the opposition for the Women’s 2nd team from Sunderland did not arrive for the fixture. The Men’s Squash team had a nightmare up at Durham, as player withdrawls meant a weakened team and Durham took full advantage to defeat Leeds Met for the first time this season.
Basketball
In Basketball the Men achieved victory by a narrow margin 72 – 69, despite the fact that Sheffield only brought a small squad of players. The Women meanwhile absolutely trounced TASC by an amazing scoreline 133 – 1, top scorer was Katie Green with 26. This will do wonders for their goal difference tally and given that they play TASC next week this result should put them well clear of arch rivals Sheffield.
