Festive Fun
3/12/05
Volunteers from Leeds’ two Universities have once again entered into the Christmas spirit by organising a Winter Festival. Part of the Up Your Street project, the festival allows students and permanent residents of the LS6 postcode to herald in the festive season together.
The event took place across two venues. Student volunteers, Walt, Karina and Emma, dressed up as Santa and elves to host an afternoon event in the Cardigan Centre. Guests were kept busy with Japanese calligraphy, face-painting, bingo and arts and crafts, as well as a Christmas quiz and raffle with prizes kindly donated by local shops. Music was provided by local groups, including the Leeds Silver Sparrows Steel Band, while a buffet was served.
Kath, a local resident said: “It was really good to see the students doing something for the community, events like this really help students to mix in with the locals. It was a wonderful day and we really appreciate those who organised and took part in the festival.”
In the evening, the festivities moved to The Fenton, Woodhouse Lane, where Music Technology students from Leeds Met organised the evening programme. Local bands The Somatics, Viva High Rollers and It Takes Bridges entertained the crowd with free live music and support from a host of DJs.
Geoff, a third year Music Technology student said: “The project really helped with my course as one of our modules is community based. The festival worked really well and there was a good turnout of guests. People seemed to really enjoy themselves and it was good to give local talent the opportunity to showcase their skills.”
Now in its 3rd year, the festival is part of the Up Your Street project, a joint initiative run by student members of Community Action @ Leeds Met (CALM) and the University of Leeds. The project aims to regenerate the local area, improve the environment and build positive community relations between students and residents.
