Students and staff from the Carnegie Faculty of Sport & Education were at the Royal Armouries over the weekend raising the profile of the university’s partnership with the museum and supporting the Sporting Challenge, which runs from 18-26 February.

As part of a quest to discover the true origins of Olympic sport, guests to the museum had the opportunity to demonstrate their throwing and kicking skills in the Tiltyard and have a sports science fitness assessment in the Hall of Steel, run by Leeds Met students and staff. Children’s Olympics also took place in the Newsroom.

In addition, the Rhinos, Tykes Academy players and Ronnie the Rhino were on hand on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February to support Leeds Met in its contribution to making this a high impact and sustainable annual event by providing opportunities for the public to rub shoulders with champions.

Comments from visitors included, “It has been great fun and we’ve learned something new” to “My son is mad about rugby league and he has really enjoyed watching the skills demonstrations.”

As a world class regional university, Leeds Met is working to support cultural and sporting opportunities not only for students and staff but also for our broader regional community. Leeds Met is working to make the fullest possible contribution to the region’s economic and social development and this particular partnership, draws upon Carnegie’s expertise in the twin themes of sport and education.

Sport and exercise science is concerned with sport performance, physical activity and health, and the faculty’s courses, research and partnerships represent these strands. At the Royal Armouries visitors will be able to experience both strands through fitness assessment and sporting performance. Leeds Met sport scientists are currently working to support preparations of the British Army’s Everest West Ridge expedition taking place this year, while exercise scientists are developing programmes in ‘walking to health’ and GP referral schemes. The application of research is central to Leeds Met’s aim to participate in partnerships aimed at enriching the life experiences of students, their families and their communities.

At and earlier event, Dr Eddie Halpin, Director of the Praxis Centre at Leeds Met, was at the Royal Armouries to represent the university which has become one of the first two ‘knights’ of the museum.
