The Futures Project
12/01/06

The Vice-Chancellor attended the opening of 'The Futures Project' on the lower concourse of the Civic Quarter to see for himself the innovation and creativity of the designers of the 21st century.
The exhibition featured work from second year BA (Hons) Design, and postgraduate architecture and landscape architecture students produced as part of their ‘The Futures Project’ module.
The module brief was to research and develop design proposals for the future of Leeds Met and higher education in general. Some looked at pragmatic, short to medium-term proposals; others represented 'blue sky' innovation. Any aspect of the university could be considered, from building redesign, street furniture, studio and teaching spaces, through to information exchange networks and relaxation and information exchange areas.
During the three month project they were supported by university staff Mark Warner from Environment and Purchasing, John Heap from e-Learning, David Woodcock from Capital Projects Team and James Poskitt, Project Director at The Portland Gate. The exhibition launch also served as a presentation ceremony for outstanding work with cash prizes donated by Environment and Purchasing and e-Learning to students Michael Nixon, Kristy Moran and Natalie Hooper.
Talking about the module, double prize winner Michael said: “it was quite a challenge and was the longest project I’d worked on, but it also offered the first chance to work with an outside agent which was great.”
The exhibition, in the Lower Concourse of the Civic Quarter,
will remain on display until Friday 10 February.
