Leeds Met leads on environmental index
27/01/06
Since 1999, the eight universities and top 200 companies in the Yorkshire and Humber region have been completing a Business in the Community (BITC) environment index. The index has proven to be very successful in improving the environmental management of the organisations involved.
The positive influence of the index has been presented to the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC) which helps institutions to become more environmentally responsible and gives environmental practitioners the support they need to implement effective innovations.
In 2005, the EAUC, BITC, University of Sheffield and Leeds Met put together a bid under HEFCE's Leadership, Governance and Management Fund to 'test how appropriate BITC's environment and corporate responsibility indices are for the sector'. A total of £66,970 was awarded to the project by HEFCE with Leeds Met being the lead institution.
As a result Leeds Met is currently recruiting 30 institutions
to take part in completing either the environment or corporate
responsibility index. The results of the project will then be
presented at the EAUC conference in April before being sent to
HEFCE, professional organisations and the press. The report aims
to highlight the work being done nationally particularly bringing
it to the attention of institutions not involved and to acknowledge
and praise those that are taking part.
