Local MP welcomes global perspective on teaching
22 May 2003

Colin Burgon, Labour MP for Elmet, and former student of Leeds
Metropolitan University recently returned to his old university
to present awards to local schools participating in the Global Teacher
Project.
A former teacher, who trained at Leeds Met, Colin was ideally suited
to present these awards which recognise the international dimension
of education and of teacher training.
Colin Burgon MP said: "I am pleased to be back at my old college
and to be associated with such a valuable and worthwhile project.
As a former humanities teacher I believe that it is vitally important
for children to understand the world around them. It is good news
that the project has been a success."
Little London Primary School and Carr Manor Primary School were
praised for embracing the project and for supporting the trainee
teachers from Leeds Met in their teaching and in their implementation
of the Global Teacher Project.
Gary Holmes, Head of the School for Educational and Professional
Development at Leeds Met, said: "As a former teacher and now an MP
Colin understands the importance of children having an understanding
of, and a concern for, development issues and whole-world issues.
"The project is designed to encourage the teacher to relate
the curriculum to wider perspectives on local and global issues
. This means pupils are learning about the diversity of life far
beyond the classroom."
Alison Robson, a teacher from Carr Manor Primary School, comments:
"Students from the University have promoted our children’s
knowledge and understanding of history through global education.
This is one of the best things we do!”
