Yesterday saw the first of the series of opportunities for all staff to listen to, and question, me. The questions were well put. Those who needed to escape from the session during that questioning not only explained why they had to go but in some cases mentioned to me later in the day points they would have raised. Incidentally, these are informal occasions and colleagues are free to leave when they wish. I have been asked if I will be saying much the same at the remaining sessions by some who are contemplating returning for another round. It depends.
The themes will be common but I will illustrate them differently,
partly depending on what questions are asked and partly on the
particular context. For instance, the opening venue was right
by the reception area in the city campus so I tried to explain
why building works are happening there now. This is an exercise
in equalizing opportunities or levelling up through the provision
of a ramp so that all staff and students, with whatever disabilities,
have access to the refreshment area. This will make a difference
practically and challenges us to enable all-comers to be refreshed
also by lifelong learning.
