The Commonwealth Games & Beyond…
16/03/06

Leeds Rhinos Kevin Sinfield, Willie Poching and Jamie Jones
Buchanan took time out of their study schedule to learn more
about the
Commonwealth when they visited the Commonwealth
Games and Beyond exhibition at Headingley Campus.
The exhibition celebrates the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, where Chancellor Brendan Foster will be commenting for the BBC and Carnegie Scholars Amanda Evans and Richard Buck are representing their countries.
From Monday 13 March to Friday 17 March contributions from students and staff on the theme of the Commonwealth Games will be on display in the Library, Helpzone and the refreshment area in the James Graham Building, Headingley Campus. From Friday 17 March to Friday 24 March the same exhibition will be on display in the Civic Quarter.
The Commonwealth Games is the single most popular manifestation of the Commonwealth. The exhibition is a celebration of the ‘friendly games’ at international level and a chance to understand what the Commonwealth represents for the 53 member countries. The display items illustrate the rich diversity that exists within the Commonwealth nations including race, culture and religion, and how through the shared core values of equality, justice and democracy the Commonwealth is still strong today.
The exhibition also has contributions from Amanda Evans and
Richard Buck. Both students at Leeds Met, Amanda will be
representing
Wales in the netball team and Richard has been selected to
represent England in the 4 x 400m relay at the Commonwealth
Games.
The display will also feature contributions from international students from the Commonwealth countries. ‘Fairtrade’ posters from pupils in the Yorkshire region and a display of work associated with Commonwealth countries by design and technology students will be presented.
Work from Leeds Met Africa will be shown, Mary Green from Health and Community Care will share the work done in Africa, and work from Leeds Met Asia will display links with Commonwealth countries India and Pakistan. On the student portal there is an interactive game, The Ultimate Ballooning Challenge – Around the Commonwealth in 80 days.
On Wednesday 15 March at 6pm there will be a screening of ‘Maya’, an Indian film with English subtitles, at the Electric Press, Millennium Square. A student or staff card is required for entry, turn up or book via the portal http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/lis/lss/portal.

On Saturday 18 March Leeds, Met’s Junior Athletics Club
will represent the different countries of the Commonwealth as
young people participate in a race at the Headingley Campus Athletics
track.
