Leeds Met Appoint Loughborough Professor As New Carnegie Dean

In a further boost to its reputation for sporting and educational excellence, Leeds Metropolitan University has announced the appointment of Loughborough University Professor of Physical Education and Youth Sport, David Kirk, as the new Dean of its renowned Carnegie Faculty of Sport & Education.

Professor David Kirk is one of the country’s foremost academics in the field of sports and physical education. Currently Professor of Physical Education and Sport at Loughborough, leading a research group and with particular responsibilities for postgraduate studies, he also holds an Honorary Chair in Human Movement at the University of Queensland, Australia and an Adjunct Chair in Physical Education at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

Professor Kirk has published widely on sports and the curriculum and is currently Editor of Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy. In 2001 he received the International Olympic Committee President’s Prize for his contribution to research in physical and sports education.

Leeds Met Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Lee said:

Professor David Kirk has degrees from the Scottish School of Physical Education, the University of Glasgow and Loughborough University.

Professor Kirk has been a professor at Loughborough University since 1998. He is currently Professor of Physical Education and Youth Sport, chairing a research group and the School’s postgraduate committee. He also holds an Honorary Chair in Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland, Australia and an Adjunct Chair in Physical Education at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He has been appointed as Dean of the Carnegie Sports Faculty, Leeds Metropolitan University in November 2004.

A former European Editor of the Journal of Curriculum Studies from 1999-2004, Professor Kirk is currently Editor of Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy. He received the IOC President's Prize in 2001 for his contribution to research in physical and sport education, and the Outstanding Scholar Award in 2003 from the Research on Instruction and Learning in Physical Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association.

Professor Kirk's research interests include young people's experiences of community-based sport, curriculum change in physical education, and situated learning in physical education and sport. He has published widely on sports and the curriculum.
