Leeds Met in harmony with Black Dyke Band
07/11/05

All-comers are welcome to join the world-famous Black Dyke Band accompany students, staff and friends of the university who will be singing Handel’s Messiah on Sunday 4 December at the Headingley Campus, supported by world-class soloists from Opera North.
Chorus members will be participating in a weekend workshop starting on Saturday 3 December, culminating in a full performance of Handel’s Messiah on the evening of Sunday 4 December, starting at 7pm, in the Carnegie Tennis Centre, Headingley Campus. All are welcome to sing or to attend the performance through contacting the organiser of the weekend, Hannah Hughes, h.hughes@leedsmet.ac.uk. Tickets to watch the performance are £5 or £2 for concessions, and the concert is in support of Jane’s Appeal, the Earthquake Appeal and Brass Band Aid.
Beyond the curriculum, the university encourages student participation in cultural activities. Leeds Met’s Headingley Campus was filled with the sound of music earlier this month when students, staff, friends and families, including local choruses, Leeds Philharmonic and the Amici Singers, took part in a Singing Day organised by the university. The university’s cultural partnerships include links with Opera North, Northern Ballet, the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Harrogate International Festival.
Black Dyke Band, which this year is celebrating its 150th anniversary, is currently the holder of the European and British Open Championship titles. Each year the band, based in Queensbury, near Bradford, plays to over 50,000 people throughout this country and internationally. The band recorded the theme tune for BBC TV’s popular series Ground Force and was listed in the Sunday Times’ Top 1,000 Music Makers of All Time.
