Students from Leeds Met organised ‘Broken Beatz’ MC and Urban Arts Showcase at the Students’ Union Events Hall, Civic Quarter on Thursday 10 November.

Following last year’s successful event, student volunteers from Community Action at Leeds Met (CALM), contacted local community & youth groups and schools to encourage under 18’s to participate. The Broken Beatz MC Showcase provided the opportunity for local young people interested in urban music to show off their talents.

The winner of the competition was presented with a collection of special prizes, including studio recording time courtesy of Life Force Productions at the Host Media Centre, and the coveted ‘Golden Microphone’ kindly donated by Sound Control.

Entrants took part in a pre-event workshop allowing participants who might not normally have access to facilities, a chance to practice their MC, beat-box and break dance skills. The event also featured an appearance by Foreign Beggars, winners of ‘Best Group’ in the UK Hip Hop Awards. Breakers Unify, turntablist Sinical and MC Testament made up the judging panel.

Third year events management student, Noah Ball, said: “the project is important because connecting with and helping guide young people is one of the tools that Hip Hop can be used for; getting people involved creatively can positively channel their lives.”

Kit Turner, an events management student doing her Masters helped to organise the event, she said: “I’ve wanted to be involved in providing urban arts education to young people for a while, but it’s hard to get into. CALM has given me the opportunity to gain experience in the type of event I eventually want to make a career out of.”

The Broken Beatz MC Showcase was organised by CALM and Leeds Met Students’ Union for the Together 4 Peace festival 2005. Together 4 Peace is for local residents and students alike, who live in and around Leeds. The event was being held in support of action group ‘Mothers Against Violence’.
