Leeds Met BUSA teams registered a total of 19 wins, 7 losses and 3 draws from this week's games held in the afternoon of Wednesday 2 November at Headingley campus.
It was another triumphant day for all the Football and Rugby teams as Leeds Met continue to dominate these leagues. With 19 wins, 3 draws and only 7 losses success continues for many of the teams.
The war of the roses was not much of a battle for Men’s & Women’s Football 1st teams as Manchester arrived late and then were completely outclassed. The superior organisation, fitness and flair of Leeds Met meant that by half time it was ‘game over’ as both teams had surged ahead into a 6 – 0 lead by half time. At last the Women seemed to be firing on all cylinders playing in a 4-3-3 formation, they appeared much more composed and with excellent passing they continually posed a threat. Top goal scorer was Jenny Taylor with 3 goals, she was lethal in the cool execution of her goals. All the other Men’s teams were involved in tight games with York, TASC & Sheffield Hallam and all should be quite pleased with a win for the 2nd team (4 – 2), a draw for the 3rd team (3-3) and a narrow victory for the 4th team (4 - 3).
With only 4 rugby teams playing all the attention was focussed on the 2nd team varsity clash. This was a well contested match with Leeds Met edging out Leeds to win 15 – 0. In contrast to Varsity day the dry still conditions were quite conducive to an open running game interspersed with some excellent positional kicks from both sides. Away at Liverpool JM the girls maintained their form, keeping another clean sheet to win 50- 0. Performance of the day must go to GB Ruby League superstar Andrea Dobson as not only did she score 3 tries, converted 7 tries and but she also was very effective in the tackle, making some crucial saves for the team. Elsewhere the Men’s Rugby Union 3rd team trounced a weak York St John 2nd team 88 – 0. The Men’s Rugby League team finally started their season with a tricky fixture against TASC, that last year, played our 1st team. They won a close game 12 – 4, but more importantly this result is an indication of the progress that has been made in the sport of Rugby League at Leeds Met.
In Hockey the top of the table clashes with Durham 2nd proved a real thriller for the Men as they led 2 – 1 with 10 minutes to go. But after considerable pressure from Durham, desperate tackles from Leeds Met resulted in 2 players being sin binned, the remaining 9 players finally let in that elusive 2nd goal to level the match at 2 – 2. Meanwhile for the Women’s 1st team there were no such problems as they totally dominated the game. Goals from Bex Mitchell and Captain Hannah Norman (2) sealed a convincing victory. Mixed fortunes for the other hockey teams as both the Men’s 2nd & 3rd were defeated by Newcastle; the Women’s 2nd lost a close game to York St John (4 – 3) and the 3rd team inflicted another defeat on a team from Teesside (7 – 0).
In Women’s Tennis it was a case of ‘if only’ as after winning both the Doubles rubbers the girls then wilted in the singles with only Rachel Stubbs seeing off her opponent 7 – 6 & 6 – 0. The outcome of the match hinged on the final singles game, between Joanna Davies & Sandra Graf. It was a very close game with Nottingham taking the 1st set, Leeds Met the 2nd and then Nottingham the 3rd. A disillusioned Team Captain Philippa Davies said ‘This was a match we could have won, we really need to raise our game if we are to stay in this league’. More joy for the Men’s 1st team as they recorded another decisive win over Newcastle (8-0). Both the Mens & Womens 2nd teams played outside at York & Sheffield Hallam, the Men battled on through the rain to draw at York (5-5) and the women agreed to yet another rearrangement.
In all the other racket sport there was good news as the Mens Squash 1st & Women’s Badminton teams whitewashed their opponents Durham & York St John. The Men’s Badminton team also won at Huddersfield (5 – 3).
Although Teesside only managed to muster a 3 man golf team the win 6 – 0 will certainly help the Golf team to climb up the league.
The Netball 1st team were just too good for Chester and the scoreline of 50 – 6 was a true indication of the gulf between the sharp shooters and the amateur antics. The 2nd team also managed a win over the Leeds 3rd team (42 – 28), but in a nail biting match at Sheffield Hallam the 3rd team lost by a single point (31- 32).
But overall it was another good day for Leeds Met teams with
12 teams now leading their respective leagues (Women’s
Badminton, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Football 1st & 2nd,
Golf, Women’s Hockey 1st, Netball 2nd, Mens Rugby Union
1st, 2nd & 3rd , Women’s Rugby Union, Rugby League
and Men’s Squash).
