Out of a total of 28 BUSA fixtures played on Wednesday 9 November, Leeds Met secured 18 wins, 7 losses and 3 draws.
BUSA Results Round Up Week 4
Heavy rain at the start of the week threatened to play havoc
with many of our home fixtures but, a dry and sunny day on Wednesday
meant some crucial games could go ahead. The Women’s Football
1sts had a close game with fierce rivals MMU Cheshire on the
only match-fit football pitch on campus. After MMU Cheshire went
a goal up after 15 minutes, it was time for the Met to switch
on and start playing and, after great play by the midfield, Sarah
Dobby struck a 30-yard ball to see it hit the back of the net.
10 minutes from time saw Fresher Caroline Hulme head home a fantastic
goal for the Met to give them maximum points. The Men’s
1sts however, weren’t so lucky as they went down 2-0 away
to top-of-the-table Sheffield Hallam. The 2nds and the 3rds were
due to play a home fixture against each other, but the weather
dictated otherwise, whilst the 4ths cruised to a demolishing
7-0 win away to Lincoln.
Yet again, all of Leeds Met Rugby teams gained maximum points – the Men’s Union 1sts breezed their home game against Liverpool winning 43-0, whilst the 2nds overcame local rivals Bradford 36-9. A close score line of 35-29 put the newly-formed 3rd team into first place in their league. The Women’s 1sts who have yet to concede a point this season let alone a fixture, stormed through to beat Liverpool 89-0, but the match had to be abandoned 10 minutes from time due to a Liverpool player breaking her arm in a tackle. In Rugby League, the 1sts saw there fourth win in four games, defeating a tough Hull team away by 26 points to 12.
There were mixed fortunes in Hockey for both the Men’s and Women’s teams this week. The Men’s 1sts could only manage a 3-3 draw away at York, whilst the 2nds had to postpone their fixture due to Huddersfield’s waterlogged astroturf. The 3rds lost a very close game to Leeds 4th’s 2-1, whilst the Women’s 2nds saw them defeat Leeds 2nds 5-4 in what was an exciting varsity match. Top-of-the-table Women’s 1sts managed a 2-2 draw away at second-placed Manchester, whilst the 3rds lost 2-1 to Newcastle 4ths.
In Netball, the 1st team lost an extremely close game 42-40 to an undefeated Newcastle, but it turns out the game will now have to be replayed due to the complaints regarding the umpiring. The 2nds, however, earned a 27 all draw at home to Sheffield Hallam 2nds. The 3rds beat Huddersfield by 37 points to 33, putting them top of their league on goal difference.
In the racket sports, tennis dominated all but one fixture with 10-0 wins against Liverpool (Men’s 1sts), Teesside (Men’s 2nds) and Sheffield (Women’s 2nds). The only exception was Women’s 1sts who ironically lost 10-0 to Loughborough at home. The Men’s Table Tennis crashed to a 19-0 loss at home to Hull, whilst the undefeated squash team cruised to a 5-0 varsity win over Leeds 2nds. Both the Men’s and Women’s Badminton teams beat their opponents 6-2 against Teesside and Hull respectively, which sees them both sitting at the top of their leagues.
The Men’s Basketball had a good win over Hull 94-62, whilst the Women’s team went one better by beating Newcastle away 93 points to 47 after a long day of travelling.
The Men’s Volleyball team were given a walkover when Sunderland
failed to field a team, and the Women had a comfortable 3-0 win
over Durham. Meanwhile in Golf, a defeat at Central Lancashire
means that Leeds sit only mid-table with some work to if they
are wanting to gain that all important promotion this year.
