BUSA Preview 15 November 2005
This week’s action in the BUSA League programme features
a number of Varsity challenges, some top of the table clashes and
the fight for Premiership status! With 10 teams as League leaders
and 16 teams unbeaten this certainly has been a ‘dream’ start
for many teams. This week there are a total of 31 fixtures of which
17 will be played at home.
The pick of the Varsity matches will take place at 6pm in the
Headingley Carnegie Stadium as the Men’s Rugby League 1st team hope
to continue their winning streak in the top of the table clash.
Leeds are their closest rivals in this league, so this fixture
is bound to be full of passion and commitment, although the Met
will definitely start as favourites again with the Varsity Day
win under their belt. The same could be said of Women’s Rugby
Union as they have shown outstanding form this season and another
win seems a forgone conclusion, the only real question seems to
be by how many points and will their invincible defence remain
unbroken for another week!
For the Men’s 1st Rugby Union team they possibly have the ‘crunch’ fixture
in the league as they travel to Durham 2, their closest rivals.
The 2nd & 3rd teams should be able to register big score against
Huddersfield and Bradford 2, on current league form. The Men’s
Rugby League 2nd play away at Sheffield.
In Football the Men’s 1st team challenge the bottom team
in the league Liverpool JM. Both the 2nd & 3rd teams after
last week’s postponement will be keen to resume the action
against TASC and Durham 2. The Women’s 1st team travel
to Loughborough, in confident mood after last week’s win
against MMU Cheshire, they are now 2nd in the league. But this
fixture really is a ‘big ask’ for the team as they
are only just starting to hit peak form. Memories of last years’ 1-1
draw come to mind, but nothing can be taken for granted against
mighty Loughborough! The Women’s 2nd team play against
a Newcastle 2nd team that might be feeling downhearted due to
the defeat by Leeds 2 last week (7 – 0).
For the Womens Hockey 1st team they play the team just below
them. On paper this looks an interesting fixture as the teams
are separated by just 1 point. But the defensive record of the
Met is the difference, as the Met have only conceded 3 goals
compared to 8 goals by Sheffield. Another scintillating fixture
will be the Women’s 2nd team as they play league leaders
Sheffield Hallam. The Men’s teams meanwhile all play at
home and they will all be looking for some wins to improve their
league positions.
In Netball the 1st team should record a win over one of the weaker
teams in their league, Hull. The 2nd and 3rd teams (both in the
same league) face tougher challenges against TASC & Leeds 3.
The Men’s Tennis 1st team have really mouth watering fixture
at home to Manchester. Both teams are unbeaten this season, but
the Met will recollect a rather controversial encounter with
them in the knockout competition last year. Lack of court time
resulted in a second trip over the Pennines to finish off the
match, this went to a Tie break shoot out and Leeds Met lost.
Thus the boys will be keen to avenge this defeat. The Women 1st
team without a win this season, will be hoping to turn the tables
on Durham and give themselves a lifeline in the Premier League.
The Women’s 2nd team play Varsity rivals indoors at South
Leeds as they seek to actually complete their fixtures (as they
still have to return to both York & Sheffield Hallam).
In the other racket sports the Men’s Badminton have a real
battle on their hands away at Sunderland as both teams are unbeaten
and Sunderland have a slightly better rubber difference. With league
leadership at stake there is all to play for. The Men’s Squash
team seem likely to overcome a Manchester team lying 2 places below
them in this league.
In the indoor ball sports Mens Basketball travel to Teesside,
a home coming for the Club Captain Lee Scott McLoughlin. Success
here will see them almost ‘running away’ with the league.
The Women’s team also striving for that elusive top spot,
take on their main rivals in this league, Sheffield. The scene
is set for a lively encounter with both teams unbeaten this season.
In Golf the team play Northumbria 2nd team and to challenge in
this league they need a win.
