The pick of the Varsity matches took
place at Headingley Carnegie Stadium as the Men’s Rugby League 1st team continued
their winning streak in the top of the table clash with a 46 -20 victory.

BUSA Results Round-Up
The teams have now reached the halfway point
in the season and so many teams playing in 6 team leagues have
met every team
once and now know who their biggest rivals are. With the sun
streaming across the Headingley Campus the cold but bright
conditions were the scene of some energetic matches. With
19 wins, 3 draws and only 8 losses it was a successful
day for
many of the teams.
Rugby League and Rugby Union
At Headingley Carnegie Stadium the Varsity rugby league match lived up
to all expectations with a competitive match. After an initially
struggle to hold the ball Leeds Met began
to assert their presence on the game. Carnegie scholar Rob Worrincy
had a brilliant game, he might not have scored but he seemed
to be everywhere, setting up others. Try scorer Nick Walker impressed
as did Gaz Thirsk back from injury and another Carnegie scholar
Matt Mulholland having switched position from centre to the pack
excelled. Full credit must go to goal kicker John Nicholls
as he not only converted an amazing 7 out of 8 kicks but scored
a try as well. Leeds Met always seemed to have the edge and eventually
ran out worthy winners at 46 – 20.
The 2nd team won
away at Sheffield (38 – 14) to complete a great day for
Rugby League.
The same could be said of Rugby Union as both men’s
and women’s team also won. With a number of
injuries and players unavailable the 1st team victory over their
main contenders in the league Durham 2 was a significant achievement.
Despite some nervous moments, they were
the better team. According to a jubilant Director of Rugby, Colin
Stephens ‘even with key players missing today the boys
pulled together as a team and did just enough to see off Durham
2nd’ (35 – 29).
At home the 2nd team produced an
energetic display showing off all the talent they have in this
squad. Forceful rucking set up numerous situations to move the
ball out wide and stretch the Huddersfield defence. Both sides
passed the ball well and used the kicking game to good effect
to gain great field positions. But Leeds Met seemed to be that
bit quicker and stronger. This win means the team continue to
dominate the league and extend their lead.
The Women’s
Rugby union team despite a slow start produced some stalwart
defending to deny varsity rivals any points at all. After being
under pressure for much of the 1st half the girls broke out to
score their 1st try. Then the floodgates opened up and Leeds
Met took control of the game. Wave after wave of attacks resulted
in tries by Katie Butler & Anna Lloyd. Surging runs from
Sian Hill, Courtney Goldsborough and excellent positional kicking
from Andrea Dobson wore down the opposition into submission.
So yet again the defence was supreme and the team managed to
notch up another victory – can things get any better for
Women’s rugby?
Football
In Football it was a day of mixed fortunes as the Women’s
1st team had no joy at Loughborough and lost their Club Captain
20 minutes into the match with a foot injury and then went onto
concede 3 goals.
Men’s 1st team
drew (1-1) with bottom placed Liverpool JM.
Men's 2nd team had a good win away at TASC (3-0), the 3rd team
beat Durham 2nd (4-2) and the 4th team beat Hull 2 (5-3).
Women’s 2nd team hammered Newcastle 2 with top scorer Amy
Liddy netting 3 goals and almost every other squad member getting
on the score sheet to record a 15-0 win. Surely promotion is
just around the corner for this team!
Hockey
Women’s Hockey 1st team started sluggishly
against top of the table rivals Sheffield going a goal down after
only 10 minutes of play. This provided the catalyst for action
as the team responded to this wake up call. They started to dominate
the game and eventually recorded a comfortable victory (5 -2)
with goals from Carnegie Scholar Lyndsey French (2), Leanne Sharples
(2) and Hannah Norman. After the match team captain Hannah Norman
said’ We’ve been top of the league since Week 1 and
we are determined that it will stay that way so we get into the
Premiership playoffs’.
Men's hockey had a better day with the
1st team drawing with Northumbria (1-1), the 2nd team had an
emphatic 4-0 win over Leeds 3rd team and the 3rd team got a
walkover against Bradford 2.
Tennis
The indoor tennis courts were the scene of some exciting action
for both the Men’s & Women’s 1st teams. The Women’s
team in particular capitalised on a weakened team from Durham.
The Davies double act (Jo & Philippa) secured a doubles rubber
and then Gina Yates & Jo Davies won the singles to secure
a draw (5 - 5). If only this result had hinged on a countback
of games as Leeds Met girls would have recorded their 1st win
(43 – 40)
but alas they must go to Nottingham next week to seal their fate
in the Premier league.
The Men meanwhile faced a very strong
team from Manchester and did not get much luck in certain rubbers.
Oh, how different things could have been as at one point the
Met were a break up in the Doubles, and 2 out of the 4 singles
went to 3 sets. Tom Inskip must be praised for his dedication
to the team as despite suffering from Tonsillitus he played for
the team and definitely had chances in his singles match. But
only Alasdair Leapman won his singles so the boys lost their
1st match this season. There was a similar story for the Men’s
Badminton as they travelled to Sunderland for the ‘crunch’ game
of the league, losing (2 – 6).
Squash
For Men’s squash it
was a close shave but the No. 1 player Chris Legthorn battled
to win the final match so the Met won narrowly 3 – 2.
Basketball
In Women’s Basketball there was a major scalp for the
girls in the form of a victory over big rivals Sheffield (83 – 65).
Both teams were unbeaten going into the game, so league leadership
was the prize for the winners. It was nip and tuck all the way
through with periods of dominance by both teams. But in the end
it was the excellent defensive play, superior fitness and sheer
determination that rewarded the Met. Carnegie scholar Helen Naylor
made a big impact in this fixture showing individual brilliance
and pushing the score up. This really was a outstanding occasion
for the rise of Women’s Basketball at Leeds Met and the
girls in particular would like to thank the large crowd of Mens & Women’s
footballers, Women’s Hockey players , Athletes, parents
and Carnegie staff members that turned out to watch the spectacle
unfold.
At Teesside the boys made it a double celebration for
Basketball as they romped home to another victory (87 – 60).
The message is now loud and clear Basketball is on the way up
at Leeds Met!
