BUSA Preview Wednesday 23 November 2005
The teams are now at the halfway point in the BUSA League programme. With 13 teams leading their Leagues, spirits are high and expectations are now rising as Women’s Badminton, Men’s Basketball Men’s and Women’s Football 2nd’s, Women’s Hockey 1st, Netball 2nd, all 3 Men’s Rugby Union teams, Women’s Rugby Union, Men’s Rugby League, Squash and Women’s Volleyball revel in League leadership. In this week’s fixtures there is premiership survival, league leadership and goal difference all at stake for the teams. There are a total of 29 fixtures of which 16 will be played at home.
The Football club need to improve on their away form as both the Men’s and Women’s 1st teams play away at Teesside and Birmingham. The Teesside game will be a real needle match given the protracted relationship between the 2 teams as despite a win at home Teesside appealed about the neutrality of the referee and forced a replay. The women drew with Birmingham at home but since then Birmingham haven’t won a match, so this is an opportune moment for the girls to pull off a win and leapfrog into second spot as MMU Cheshire play Loughborough. The Women’s 2nd team go ‘head to head’ with their biggest rivals in the league - Sunderland. Both teams are unbeaten and have impressive goal scoring abilities so this should be a real cracker.
In Rugby Union the Men’s 1st team hope that Keele can muster a team (as they conceded last week). The 2nd team travel to Durham and they will be hoping to return with another win under their belt to continue their dominance in this league. For the Women a trip to Salford beckons and given that they beat them en route to the Shield final and at home earlier on this should be another win. The Rugby League challenge bottom placed Edge Hill, so watch out for a big score line.
In Hockey all 3 men’s and 2 women’s teams play at home. The Women’s Hockey 1st team play a struggling Newcastle team. The 2nd team play bottom placed York. The highlight of the Men’s fixtures will be that of the Varsity clash between the Met 1st and Leeds 2, after a succession of drawn matches the Met need to record a win to challenge league leaders Durham.
In Netball the 1st team will be seeking revenge for the single point defeat at the hands of Sheffield Hallam. This should be a thriller as Sheffield could be labelled ‘top dogs’ in this league but at home the Met have an unbeaten record this term. Prior to this fixture the 2nd and 3rd will take centre stage as they play each other.
The Women’s Tennis 1st team visit Nottingham knowing that only a win will save them from the relegation play offs. After last week’s lifeline they should take heart, but playing away is never easy, so they really need to perform at their peak to achieve Premiership survival. The Women’s 2nd team managed to entice the team from York to play indoors at the Carnegie Regional Tennis centre. The Men’s 2nd team challenge Durham 3 in an interesting fixture as only 1 place separates them in the league.
In the other racket sports the Men’s Badminton should recover from the defeat by Sunderland as they take on a weaker team from Hull. Similarly the Men’s Squash team should have an easier match this week against a bottom placed team from MMU Cheshire.
In the indoor ball sports both Men’s and Women’s Basketball play Bradford. Whilst the Men are surging ahead with the nearest team 6 points behind them the Women still haven’t played sufficient fixtures to knock Sheffield off the top spot. Both should record wins to keep them on track for promotion.
In Volleyball the Women’s team have a contentious fixture against 2nd placed Sheffield Hallam, as teams only play each other once in this league it is important that the Met capitalise on their home advantage. The Men will also have a close fixture against the team lying just below them Sheffield 2.
In Golf the team welcome Durham for the home visit with a win a necessity if they are to challenge in this league.
