Fewer fixtures played on Wednesday 23 November as the weather forced postponements, opposing teams start to fall by the way side and rearrangements kicked in. But for those that did play, the underlying ethos of the day was resilient defending, potent attacking and the determination to succeed.
The teams achieved 19 wins, 1 draw and only 5 losses on a bitterly cold day, when many were glad to be playing inside.
Netball
The performance of the day must go to Netball 1st team as they sought revenge for the single point defeat inflicted on them by Sheffield Hallam. From the outset the girls were so focussed on the game; using the width of the court, there were some fast flowing moves finished off by accurate shooting from Carnegie scholar Amanda Evans. The defence also capitalised on sloppy passing from Sheffield, intercepting to great effect feeding the ball up to the shooters, who rarely missed an opportunity to convert all their shots into points. By the final quarter the Met team finished in style with some fast and furious moves increasing the margin of victory to 21 points. This was indeed an impressive display by the girls and Sheffield Hallam must have wondered what had hit them as the ‘whirlwind’ of a Leeds Met team stormed through to record their best result of the season (55 – 34).
Prior to this game the 2nd team dominated the goal scoring to overwhelm the 3rd team. The battle between the 2 teams was won by the 2nd team (51 – 29), as they got the better of the on court ‘tussle’, delivered slick passes and were more accurate in shooting. This leaves the 2nd team as league leaders and promotion hopefuls.
Football
In Football the decision of the Carnegie Football Coach and Educator John Hall not to train last Monday definitely paid dividends as all the Men’s teams notched up victories. Particular satisfaction will be derived from the 1st team game at Teesside as the boys pulled off a 7 – 0 win with Kev Ryan getting a hatrick and Dave Breeze a double strike. The other teams were also in great goal scoring form as the 2nd and 3rd teams got 5 and the 4th team got 7. All these results will boost their goal difference that can be all important in the final placing for the leagues.
The Women meanwhile did not fare as well with the 1st team only managing a goal less draw at Birmingham, despite sustained pressure on Birmingham for the last 15 minutes of the match, likened to that of ‘pinball’ in the goal mouth, but despite all their efforts the ball just would not go in the net. The 2nd team getting a raw deal in more ways than one at Sunderland, losing a very physical game 4 – 0, losing a player in the second half and denting the team’s promotion hopes, as they do not have the opportunity to seek revenge in this league.
Rugby
In rugby only 2 out of the 6 teams actually played, as cancellation due to fog at Edge Hill sidelined the Rugby League team, no scheduled fixture for the 3rd team RU & RL 2nd and a walkover from Keele to the 1st team RU. Thus the Men’s 2nd team secured a great result against Durham 3 (13 – 8) and the Women’s Rugby union defence was breached for the first time this season by Salford, although the girls did triumph 37 – 5 in this fixture. According to Carnegie scholar and captain Sam Jamieson ‘ I’m glad Salford scored as it served as a big wake up call to the team as they had become a little bit complacent and it made them knuckle down and pull together as a team’. The match itself did test the Met as Salford were a much bigger team with a large pack but tries from Courtney Goldsborough, Sian Hill, Claire Marlow and Liz Schroder; and conversions from Carnegie scholars Andrea Dobson & Sam Jamieson were the difference in this game.
Hockey
In Hockey the Women’s Hockey 1st team recorded an impressive victory over a well drilled Newcastle team. Goals from Ally Bicker, Ella Stones and Sacha Hateley Lowe gave them a 3-0 win. Yet again the defence remained impenetrable with Carnegie scholar Kirsty McKay as Goal keeper this has definitely boosted confidence levels throughout the team, as despite considerable pressure from Newcastle the defenders blocked all pathways to goal. The Met in contrast always looked dangerous on the attack, with another scholar Lyndsay French was unlucky not to score, although Club captain Sacha Hateley Lowe was given the honour of player of the match for her high work rate. The 2nd team defeated York for a second time 4 – 0. The men just edged out varsity rivals Leeds 2 in a close encounter 3 – 2 to keep their promotion hopes alive as they continue to put pressure on League leaders Durham 2. The 2nd team stunned Northumbria 2 with a 7 – 1 win, but the 3rd team struggled against Sheffield Hallam losing 2 – 5.
Tennis
The indoor tennis courts were taken over by the both the Men’s & Women’s 2nd teams. The Men played Durham 3, on paper this seemed like a close match but in fact the Met achieved a comfortable victory only missing out on a singles rubber. The Women’s 1st team at ‘last chance saloon’ Nottingham were unable to pull off a miracle and salvage Premiership status, so they now must look forward to a play off next term.
Badminton
The Men’s Badminton got a walkover courtesy of Hull and the Men’s Squash team whitewashed a side from MMU Cheshire. This means they are the only unbeaten team in this league and their target of Premiership status looks like being a reality.
Basketball
In Basketball both teams played Bradford and both teams won although not by the margin they would have hoped for. The Men won by 78 – 70after a close well fought game, whereas the Women were convincing winners, although due to problems with the electronic score board this was only recorded as 68 – 40. Both teams are surging ahead in their leagues and remain on course to not only win the league but achieve promotion.
Volleyball
With only 4 teams left in the league the Men’s Volleyball
value every fixture and they made the most of the game against
Sheffield 2, taking 4 sets to win 3 – 1. Unfortunately
for the women their match over ran the facility time and so will
have to be replayed at Sheffield Hallam. According to Team Captain
Linzi Coulson as she reflected on the 1 – 2 score line ‘the
girls will have to improve on this performance if they are to
be league leadership contenders’.
