BUSA Preview 30th November 2005
There are now 12 teams (Women’s Badminton, Men’s Basketball
Men’s Football 2nd’ & 4th, Women’s Hockey
1st, Netball 2nd, all 3 Men’s Rugby Union teams, Women’s
Rugby Union, Men’s Rugby League 1st and Squash) leading their
Leagues. The action this week is mainly confined to the outdoors
where there is a feast of action on the grass pitches as 3 Football
and 5 Rugby teams play at home. The battle for the promotion play
off places is definitely ‘hotting up’.
Football
The men’s Football club must be feeling a lot more confident
as all their 4 teams are either in 1st or 2nd spot in their leagues.
The 1st team will be hoping to turn the tables on Sheffield and
make amends for the away defeat. Both the 2nd & 3rd teams play
weaker opposition in Huddersfield & York. The 4th team have
a varsity clash with Leeds away at Weetwood. The Women’s
1st hope to overcome newly promoted DMU Bedford, as they went down
2 – 1 at their venue, thanks to some dubious refereeing decisions.
The girls need to get their goal scoring boots on this week, as
this is a very tight league and goal difference could be the telling
factor in this league.
Rugby League and Union
In Rugby Union the men’s 1st team play away at Hull. The
previous encounter was quite a tough fixture (33 – 15)
so the boys need to keep their cool. The 2nd team challenge their
nearest rivals Newcastle 3 and a win here would put them into
an untouchable position in this league. Women’s rugby union
team are unlikey to play this week as Sheffield are rumoured
to be struggling to raise a team. The Rugby League 1st team challenge
a struggling Liverpool Hope team that haven’t won a match,
so watch out for a big score. The 2nd team also have a game against
Huddersfield; this might be an interesting fixture as they have
won 3 out of 4 games; although they haven’t played Leeds
Met yet.
Hockey
In Hockey both the Men’s and Women’s 1st teams play
weaker teams Hull & Liverpool. Both will be looking to boost
their goal tally. The other men’s teams have difficult
fixtures as the 2nd team play the team just below them Sheffield
3 & the 3rd team play top of the table Durham 4. The Women’s
2nd team play the team just below them Teesside, if they can
repeat the 14 – 0 demolition then this will put pressure
on top of the table Sheffield Hallam.
Netball
In Netball the 1st team travel to Manchester without their sharp
shooter Amanda Evans. This will not be an easy fixture unless they
can reproduce the stunning performance of last week. The 2nd team
will play in the Carnegie Research Institute for the first time
against lowly Huddersfield, a big win seems inevitable as they
won 45 – 21 at Huddersfield. The same could be said of the
3rd team as they play a TASC team that hasn’t won a match
yet.
Tennis
All the 3 Tennis teams play away and the pick of the action is
the Men’s 1st team varsity game at South Leeds. The Met
have only lost to Manchester and have already beaten the University
twice this Term so they must go into this match as hot favourites.
The Men’s 2nd team still unbeaten in the league should
overcome the lower placed team from Huddersfield. The Women’s
2nd team return to Sheffield Hallam to fulfil a fixture rained
off. The guarantee of indoor courts means that we should get
a result this time.
Squash
In Squash the men have a mouth watering prospect as they play
their nearest rivals Newcastle. In the first match the Met just
edged it 3 – 2, but anything can happen. A win against this
team would mean they have booked their place in the Premiership
play offs.
Basketball
In the indoor ball sports both Men’s & Women’s
Basketball should continue their winning ways against Durham & Northumbria
2. Both these teams are in 3rd position in these leagues so there
is no room for complacency.
Volleyball
In Volleyball only the Men have a game, but it is a crucial match
for them as Durham lead the league although they both have the
same number of points. This could be the league decider as there
are only 4 teams left in the league.
Golf
In Golf the team need to fulfil the fixture against league leaders
Central Lancs 2nd, as a number of teams have conceded matches in
this league. So progression to the knockouts might depend on playing
every game and winning as many games as possible.
