Leeds Met Carnegie Dodgeball Tournament

This year saw an introduction to a new sport at Leeds Met – and one that students are crazy about – Dodgeball. Just like the film, the aim of the game is for your team to get the other team out by throwing soft hand-sized balls at your opponents in a badminton-sized court. Teams are usually 6-a-side and apart from needing to be a good thrower, you’ve also got to be a good dodger!
The Leeds Met Dodgeball Society was set up this year and is run by student Gareth Llewellyn Hughes who got together with Sarah Humphreys, Leeds Met’s Sports Participation Officer, to organise a Dodgeball Tournament for both students and staff to take part in. Sarah commented: “The interest for this sport is huge and by hosting this tournament, we aim at increasing the profile of Dodgeball for the students at Leeds Met, which is one of the first universities in the country to set up its own society for the sport.”
Twelve teams in total entered the tournament with representatives from the swimming club, netball and football teams and, of course, the Dodgeball Society. Both men and women took part in the tournament, with many taking the opportunity to try the sport for the first time. After the round-robin fixtures and the quarter-finals eliminated the majority of ‘first-time’ teams, the semi-finals pitched the Leeds Met 1st team against the 4ths, and the 2nds against the ‘New Kids On The Block’.
After some intense dodging, both the 1st and 2nd teams lined up against each other in the final. Club Captain Gareth said: “I was hoping there would be at least one of our teams representing the club in the final – I would have been a bit worried if there wasn’t!” After 3 games, the 1sts proved too superior over their club rivals, thus clinching the first ever Leeds Met Carnegie Dodgeball Trophy.
