Leeds Met Health & Wellness Weeks
25/11/05

Our health is the most important aspect of our lives yet its importance often gets neglected or overlooked. Being healthy doesn’t necessarily mean being a world-class athlete and, often, myths and stereotypes alter our perceptions of what being healthy really means.
The Leeds Met Health and Wellness Weeks are aimed at educating and informing staff within the university of the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, and what you can do to achieve optimal health in all walks of life.

Each day will focus on a specific factor relating to health promotion and, led by qualified tutors, the sessions will aim to improve both attitudes and behaviours relating to your own personal health.
Staff will need to book on to the sessions individually so we know how many people to account for, and can do so by emailing s.a.humphreys@leedsmet.ac.uk, or telephoning 0113 283 3160/ext. 4851, stating which session(s) you would like to attend. The sessions are as follows:
Stress Management Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to identify what it is that stresses
us, how we know when we are stressed, and how to develop strategies
for coping with the different forms of stress that we encounter
from day-to-day.
Tai Chi & Relaxation Practical
A practical session which introduces participants to the breathing
and relaxation techniques of Tai Chi and the Qi Gung 18 form
of exercises, which aims to relax both the body and the mind.
Healthy Eating & Nutrition Workshop
This workshop targets the nutritional aspects of health promotion
and ways to improve not only what we eat but how we eat, and
attempts to inform staff of dieting myths, the benefits of eating
well, and how both good and bad nutrition affects our overall
health.
Fitness Class Tasters: Boxercise and Pilates
Both classes are introduction sessions to two of the most popular
fitness classes around today. Boxercise is a fun and energetic
class that uses boxing techniques, combined with an aerobic-style
workout, to help tone the muscles and relieve stress. Pilates
is a workout that builds strength with flexibility and aims
at achieving harmony between mind and muscle, with primary
focus
on the abdominal core.
Health Centre & Active Lifestyle
Workshop
The aims of this workshop are to educate participants about contemporary
health issues such as smoking, drinking, sexual health, etc,
and also to explore the benefits of leading an active lifestyle
both in and out of work.
