On Friday 11th November, the Secretary of State for International Development and Member of Parliament for Leeds Central, Hilary Benn, MP delivered a seminar hosted by the School of Applied Global Ethics in association with the Praxis Centre.
Over eighty students, staff and members of the local business community attended the event, held at Leeds Metropolitan University.
The talk entitled “Human rights and development in the
real world” touched on a wide range of issues including
the refutation that prosperity ensures political freedom, the
rethinking of aid conditionality, the need for debt cancellation,
and the establishment of a standing humanitarian fund.
He drew on examples from the work of The Department for International
Developments, including their role in supporting good governance
initiatives in Africa.
The seminar concluded with a short question and answer session which covered issues of governance in Ethiopia, Europe’s role in the current world trade negotiations and the arms trade.
