Over 700 international students received a warm civic welcome from the Lord Mayor of Leeds at Leeds Town Hall.
Students from across the globe sampled the traditional British dish of cottage pie and were entertained by Leeds Morris Men who performed a traditional English dance.
The event, which was jointly organised by Leeds City Council, Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Leeds and Leeds Federation of FE Colleges, gave students the opportunity to meet the Lord Mayor, Councillor William Hyde and Lady Mayoress Mrs Patricia Hyde as well as the Vice-Chancellors from Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds and Principals from Park Lane College, Leeds College of Technology and Leeds Thomas Danby.
Leeds Met student Yuko from Japan attended the event and commented "Morris dancing is unusual but in some ways it is similar to traditional dancing in Japan. I enjoyed watching the dancers and this was the first time I have tried Shepherds pie which was delicious."
The annual event was started by the Rotary Club, which has organised
welcome events for international students for the last 50 years.
