Rugby League Heritage Centre host project for Leeds Metropolitan University Students
17/11/05

A group of Leeds Metropolitan University tourism management students are working on a project with The Rugby League Heritage Centre in Huddersfield, which will inform The Heritage Centre’s strategy to increase visitor numbers. As part of the project students will be researching current awareness among rugby league supporters and advising on how the product can be modified and promoted.
The Rugby League Heritage centre was opened on 30 August this year at The George Hotel in Huddersfield, the famous hotel where the game was founded in 1895. Displays at the Heritage Centre include shirts, caps, medals and photographs. The centre is the brainchild of Sky Sports presenter Mike Stephenson, who has denoted his entire personal collection to the project.
The students will be working on the project with Sam Morton,
Manager of the Centre and will be supervised by Dr Rhodri Thomas,
from The Tourism, Hospitality and Events school at Leeds Met.
Dr Rhodri Thomas said: “This is a marvellous opportunity
for our students to work with a new attraction that is of international
sporting significance. All of the students recognise that being
given the chance to apply what they have learnt in the classroom
to this kind of environment is challenging, but they are rising
to that challenge with competence and great enthusiasm.”
