The Carnegie Research Institute at Leeds Met, in conjunction with Taylor and Francis Events, hosted the first event in the Carnegie Seminar Series, entitled Sport and Anti- Racism in the 21st Century at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Speakers at the event, which examined the urgent questions on the future of anti-racism in British sport, included Leeds Met Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Lee, who spoke about reaching out to the community to work with sporting clubs and their supporters. Professor Lee was followed by leader of the Commission for Racial Equality Lord Ouseley, who highlighted discrimination in society and commented: “We are moving from a ‘them and us’ neighbourhood to an ‘all of us’ neighbourhood and from a ‘them and us’ society’ to an ‘all of us’ society.” Professor Lee and Lord Ouseley were joined by David Gent from Sport England, Yorkshire and Humber and lecturers from Leeds Met.

Dr Karl Spracklen, from the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education, who also spoke at the event, said: “Leeds Metropolitan University and staff of the Carnegie Research Institute have a strong track record in researching sport, race and racism. We are continuing to research in this important area, in particular we are updating our knowledge of where sport in the UK is, in terms of tackling racism and promoting racial equality.”

The Carnegie Research Institute operates across a wide range of sport and education issues. Its large and increasing research team has developed an international reputation in diversity, equality and inclusion, which supports other work on active lifestyles and leisure policy.
