Leeds Met contributed to World Responsible Tourism Day through an initiative with local schools in West Yorkshire. The Responsible Holiday Challenge saw primary school children around Leeds, who are the tourists of tomorrow, creating paintings and producing collages that show what they think a responsible holiday is.

The posters were displayed at Leeds Met and judged by a distinguished group of experts including, Ashley Jackson, the renowned Yorkshire artist and Professor Fiddlesticks, an environmental campaigner and children’s entertainer. Prizes were awarded by Ronnie the Rhino, the mascot for the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team.

Professor Harold Goodwin said: “I am delighted that Leeds Met is a global leader in the responsible tourism movement. World Responsible Tourism Day is a great opportunity for us to share our expertise with the travel and tourism industry and the tourists of tomorrow.”

Georgina Winterburn, Head of Roundhay St Johns Primary School said: “It’s great for all the children to be able to display their work at the same time. I think it’s really fantastic for them to come and experience a real university so they know what they are aiming for.”

Anthony Kamau, from Nairobi, Kenya who is in his second year of the accelerated two year BA (Hons) Tourism Management commented: “It’s been such a great event and we hope it will be a national event next year. Children are the world’s future tourists; they have already been telling me that some of them have already been on holiday to India, Jamaica and Greece to name but a few.”
